3 myths about business and marriage… busted in 3 minutes

The Couple·preneur

Hey friend,

"Starting a business will ruin your marriage."

We’ve all heard this warning.

Business brings:

  • Too much stress
  • Too many sacrifices, and
  • Too many couples who don’t make it

But here’s what no one talks about…

What if business isn’t a threat to your relationship...
but an
advantage?

Most people believe you have to choose:

  • A thriving business (or)
  • A strong relationship.

The problem isn’t business, it’s how we choose to structure it.

Most entrepreneurs approach it as Solopreneurs, keeping business and marriage separate, struggling to balance both.

But Couplepreneurs play a different game.

For Couplepreneurs, integrating business and marriage makes both stronger.

Here are 3 myths about mixing business and marriage we hear all the time:

Myth 1: "You have to separate business from your relationship to keep it strong."

Truth: When you combine business and your relationship with a clear vision, you actually strengthen both.

Starting an online business together forced us to get crystal clear on what we wanted, not just in business, but in life.

To take full control of our future, we needed space, time, and a runway.

So we saved up, Adam quit his 9-5, and we gave ourselves a year to experiment, explore, and define what a good life means for us.

During this time, we took long walks, had deep conversations, and worked through uncomfortable moments where we weren’t sure what was next.

  • We studied business and writing together.
  • We went through courses and workbooks together.
  • We recorded conversations and brainstormed ideas.

And through that process, we didn’t just build a business...
we built a stronger foundation for our life together.

Myth 2: "Mixing business and marriage creates more problems than it solves."

Truth: When you leverage your relationship, you create a competitive edge that solopreneurs don’t have.

Adam and I have both spent years experimenting with business and learning on our own.

And we’ve both had moments where things didn’t go as planned:

  • an almost ready podcast episode got lost in the clouds
  • a bad sales call led to heaps of self-doubt
  • we hit setback after setback

Going through that alone is hard.

But when we started working tother, we found out competitive edge.

When one of us has a rough day, the other is there to hold the vision, remind us why we’re doing this, and keep us moving forward.

Myth 3: "Working with your spouse means constant conflict. You’ll argue about everything."

Truth: When you leverage each other’s strengths, you eliminate unnecessary friction and work as a team instead of against each other.

We don’t compete...
we know that we're on the same team.

Adam is great at sales and strategy, while I thrive in networking and building connections.

Sure, some of our skills overlap, but because we know we’re on the same team, we trust each other’s strengths instead of stepping on each other’s toes.

That shift alone has eliminated so much friction.

When you recognize that you’re working toward the same goal, it’s easier to give each other grace, stay in your lane, and move forward together.

Myths Busted 🚫

Starting a business will NOT ruin your marriage.

Business doesn’t have to pull couples apart, it can bring them closer.

Here’s what we’ve learned:

Clarity of vision Strong foundation:
When you’re working toward the same vision, it sets the foundation for a strong business and life.

Building together > Struggling alone:
Going it along is hard. Having someone there who understands what your going through can be the difference between pushing through and giving up.

Your relationship = Your advantage:
Leveraging each other’s strengths helps you move faster and stronger.

We believe the future of entrepreneurship should include more Couplepreneurs:

  • Partners building together
  • Growing together
  • Winning together
