🟠 Turning "have to" into "get to"

The Couple·preneur

Hey friend,

Soon after our daughter was born last September, I posted something on Facebook that hit home for a lot of people:

We have to go to soccer practice.
We have to make dinner,
clean up,
do the dishes,
and fold the mountain of laundry.
What if all we did was change the have to’s into get to’s?"
We get to go to soccer practice.
We get to make dinner.
We get to do the dishes.
We get to fold the laundry.

It's just a small shift in words.
But it completely changes the energy,
from dread and obligation…to gratitude and joy.

I once read:
Don’t mistake your blessings for burdens.

That line has stayed with me.
Because I think it's easy to do.

Especially when we’re tired.
Especially when the days are full and the list is long.

But when we remind ourselves:
We chose this.
We wanted this.
And we get to do this…

…it helps reframe even the most ordinary moment into something sacred.

I think about my very first job.
How excited I was to even get hired.
How it felt like a privilege to work and earn my own money.

And yet, over time, the get to quietly turned into a have to.
The sparkle wore off.
And the same job I once prayed for became something I just tried to push through.

It happens in parenting too.

At the start of summer, we’re thrilled.
We plan the trips.
Sign up for camps.
Spend long days at the pool.
We say yes to everything because the season feels so open and fun.

But somewhere in the middle… we hit a wall.

The excitement turns to exhaustion.
The get to starts sounding a lot more like have to.

And even in business, it shows up.
We get to build something from scratch.
To set our own hours.
To talk with people around the world.
To pursue work we actually care about.

But when we’re overwhelmed or behind, it can feel like we have to do everything.
We have to make it work.
We have to meet our goals.

That’s why I love this small but powerful shift.

Just one word.

But it calls us back to gratitude.
To presence.
To the beauty of the life we’re creating.

We don’t have to build this life, we get to.

That’s the posture we want to come back to.

Not because every task will feel magical.
But because we know we’re choosing this path on purpose.

Here’s to building a life you love,

Maggie (& Adam)

P.S. Where have you noticed a have to creeping in lately? And what happens when you switch it to get to?

We’d love to hear from you! Reply and let us know.

Sometimes the smallest shifts bring the biggest relief.

I'm hosting a Virtual Yoga & Meditation Class!

Join me THIS Saturday, July 12th at 8am for a FREE live virtual class from the comfort of your home.

Together, we'll explore connection through gentle movement, mindful breath, and meditation.

Sometimes in order to listen to ourselves, to truly hear ourselves...our needs, wants, desires, and inner knowing, it's important to allow ourselves space to connect and ground first.

If you've never taken a virtual yoga class, it's the same as in person, you can keep your camera on or off.

All you need is your mat and an open space on your floor.

👉 Click here to sign up - I can't wait to practice with you virtually!

If you have any issues signing up, feel free to send me an email! 😄

Also, here are some cool things happening in our world...

If you’re curious how SAF Digital is helping people build their personal brand on LinkedIn, check out a few of Adam’s LinkedIn posts!

Here are his two latest, I especially LOVE this first one:

  • Maggie, my wife, grabbed my arm today. "Adam," she said, "You have to take this quiz."...

  • We choose the pace at which we progress. I was talking to a past client today and this idea really landed with me.
